Sienna Model S-100X 100W transceiver shown with Heil PR-781 mic, Kent TP-1 paddles, 12-button keypad, monitor, wireless keyboard, USB mouse, and wireless USB hub. Ham Radio Deluxe freeware is shown on the display. This "faceless" model now includes the mic and headphone jacks.

Worried about remote control of a front-panel-less model? Don't be! Sienna can be operated as a Kenwood TS-570 from most rig control programs. You won't get full functionality, but it gets you by. Meanwhile, the author of Ham Radio Deluxe has the Sienna on his "todo" list. In addition, you can easily add the Sienna remote control commands to HRD yourself. Here's a screen shot from one customer who did just that!

Add an internal PC to any model for $799 (1GHz Celeron) or $999 (2GHz Core 2 Duo)
(Assembled and tested. Includes all internal cabling, micro-ATX power supply and steel shield for supply)

Sienna is the only kit radio on the market with an optional built-in PC:

Sienna's PC compartment can house an Advantech PCM-9382 or 9386 and MIO-6254 interface
Middle picture is the micro-ATX power supply. Right picture shows supply enclosed in steel shield for mounting and RFI protection.
The ATX supply is connected to both switched and unswitched power so that when you turn off your rig, the PC executes a hardware shutdown, protecting the compact flash card against data corruption.

For an additional $49, you can add this micro-UPS (uninterruptible power supply) to provide backup power to the PC in the event your main power fails. This board connects to a small sealed lead-acid battery (not included) that fits in the compartment where the 100W amp normally goes, so it is not recommended with 100W Siennas. If you have a Sienna with the internal 100W amp and want to include the internal PC, we recommend an external UPS that can power the rig (and therefore also the PC).

Although it can use a PC, Sienna is NOT a Software-Defined Radio (SDR) (You can download new firmware into it, but that is not what SDR means). Sienna uses a traditional analog triple-conversion receiver and single conversion transmitter.

The optional internal PC adds digital modes, web connectivity, USB and all the other features of a PC built-in, but it is not required, nor do you need an external PC unless you select a model without a front panel, because the radio has its own internal microprocessors.

For an in-depth look at the differences between true SDR (e.g., Flex-5000), DSP, "Software-Augmented Radio" such as Sienna, and traditional "Software-Controlled Radio", read W0DZ's new column on "Computers and Radio" in the January issue of Monitoring Times.

Add the transmitter, amp, tuner or PC at any time to upgrade one model to the next)

ADD INRAD CRYSTAL FILTERS & COLLINS MECHANICAL FILTERS FOR AM, CW AND HIGH PERFORMANCE 70MHZ ROOFING FILTER ($115-155 each)
DZKit offers a small selection of Inrad filters for Sienna. See them here.
Visit Inrad's Sienna pages for a look at all available filters here.
(Confused about filters? Click here!)

The base model can be used as a general coverage shortwave receiver and also as a secondary receiver for a transceiver model Sienna, remote-controlled by your favorite rig control program on your own PC. Or add the internal PC and get the same capability as an external PC built-in, making it much easier to transport without all those interconnect wires to worry about! Add a front panel to it and you'll have an extremely capable secondary receiver with a full set of independent controls!)

Sienna - A Study in Duality

  • Dual microprocessors - one for keying and mic sampling, one for general control (plus the optional PC)
  • Two choices for the  optional built-in PC - one with good performance, one with high performance
  • Dual 10dB preamps & one 10dB attenuator
  • Full-duplex - Tx and Rx do not share any circuitry, allowing true cross-band operation, also useful for digital modes, satellites, transmit monitoring and much more
  • Dual receive (control external secondary receiver from optional  internal PC and route its audio to internal speaker)
  • Dual displays (blue-green vacuum fluorescent on front panel, VGA on optional embedded PC)
  • Dual keying (manual key and paddles active simultaneously with front and back panel access) using a dedicated microprocessor, providing accurate iambic timing, non-choppy QSK and a complete set of front panel controls). Keyer supports Iambic A, B and Ultimatic modes
  • Dual stereo audio (headphones and speakers active simultaneously with separate volume controls)
  • Dual analog backlit meters (with optional front panel)
  • Dual passband tuning (at 9MHz 2nd IF and 455KHz 3rd IF) with choice of four filters at each IF
  • Dual antenna ports using two relays for better isolation from A to B, plus separate receive antenna- tuner not required to get this switch!
  • Dual-tone multi-color front panel for easy identification of groups of controls (Want a different color scheme - heath green? cobalt blue? black? Just ask. There's a small extra fee, but since we use a polycarbonate overlay instead of paint, we can do that too!)
  • Dual band-change modes: External keypad has direct one-button per band selection; Front panel has a "band" button, then use the rotary knobs to change VFO memories or bands, or use the up/down buttons. (Or use remote control!)

PLUS:
Triple conversion general coverage receiver
(500KHz to 30MHz) with 15kHz roofing filter at the 70.000MHz 1st IF (4.5kHz@70.455kHz available); 4-pole 2.4kHz Inrad crystal filter at the 9MHz IF; 20kHZ ceramic filter at the 455kHz IF. Choose from a wide selection of crystal and mechanical filters to add up to 6 more filters. Separate 6kHz AM/ESSB and variable BW crystal filters at the transmitter's 10.7MHz IF). Five VFO memories per band. 1ppm TCXO standard. DZKit exclusive Passive Signal Boost (PSBTM) helps extract weak signals on a fading band. Updateable firmware. Optional Embedded PC runs Windows or Linux with LAN/USB/VGA/PS-2/RS-232 connectors on the back panel. Optional MIO board plugs onto optional PC and adds a second video display with DVI, S-Video, composite video outputs and 6W stereo speaker outputs. Optional external 12-button keypad for direct band entry and memory access. Noise Blanker with three pulse widths and variable threshold. Simple menu system. Extremely wide RIT/XIT tuning (+/- 16MHz range). Compartment for battery or 100W amp. SiliconPixels ChromaDSP and 10-band graphic equalizer (with PC option). Solid aluminum and steel construction with "no-flex", uncluttered front panel. Fully loaded Sienna is a lightweight 10 lbs (12 lbs with amp and PC) with "no-skid" rubber feet.  147 built-in memories including ten 12-character CW memories with Farnsworth speed control. Negative ALC voltage input for linears. Transverter output. 5-foot pre-wired Anderson Power Pole DC input cable provided. 455KHz IF output. Much more! And it's a true KIT with lots of soldering and mechanical construction! Our manuals look just like the kits of yesteryear!
